A Coast Measured in Weeks

This is the flattest, longest and emptiest stretch of shoreline I write about in Cyprus. The sand runs for miles, the sea is shallow and warm, and the built edge behind it is new rather than historic.

Because stays here are long, the rhythm is different from anywhere else on the island. Nothing is scheduled, days blur, and the evening does not have to begin at any particular hour.

It is also very dark at night, in a way coastal towns rarely are. That, more than anything, is what people are describing when they say they want somewhere quiet.

Long Beach, Boğaz and Bafra

Most accommodation sits along the Long Beach stretch, which runs for a considerable distance — saying simply 'Long Beach' is not enough, so tell me roughly where along it you are.

Boğaz is the small coastal settlement to the north with a modest harbour, and the Bafra area lies further along the same shoreline again.

Women write from here with more time available than anywhere else in Cyprus — a week, two weeks, sometimes longer — and with days that have no obligations attached to them at all.

Stays here run into weeks rather than nights, in buildings where the same people pass each other every day. Discretion in that setting is mostly about being unremarkable, and I am good at that. Your enquiry stays between us, I answer where you asked me to, and I ask only for the dates, the general location and anything you want me to understand. Couples can state their boundaries beforehand and they are simply respected. I promise no anonymity, no encrypted channel, no guaranteed confidentiality and no deletion of anything — what I offer is judgement, used consistently.
