Trakai is barely a town by most measures — a narrow strip of streets on a peninsula, with water on both sides of it and more water beyond that.

The castle on its island in Lake Galvė is the thing everyone photographs, and by late afternoon the visitors are gone and it simply sits there in the mist like a piece of scenery nobody is using.

The lakes themselves are the real character. They go still in the evening in a way that makes the whole place feel further from Vilnius than half an hour, and in winter the silence out here is almost complete.

Trakai is also the historic home of the Karaim community, who have lived here for centuries and whose wooden houses along the main street are part of the town's fabric. That is their heritage and their living community, described here as fact and nothing else — not decoration, not exotic colour, and not anything I have any access to or standing within.
