The Second City, On Its Own Terms

Kaunas is not a smaller Vilnius and it has no interest in being read that way. The two cities sit an hour apart and feel a century apart in temperament.

The Old Town at the confluence of the two rivers is low, brick and medieval, and quiet almost all of the time. Vilniaus Street runs out of it as the main pedestrian axis, and it is the part of the city most people walk first.

Then Laisvės Alėja — a long, straight, tree-lined pedestrian avenue through the New Town, and the spine of everything built in the 1920s and 1930s. The Modernist architecture along and behind it is the real character of this city: white curved corners, deep balconies, restrained and confident and slightly severe.

There is street art on gable ends, design studios in old industrial buildings, and a working population that is not particularly concerned with visitors. Evenings go dark and calm quickly, and the rivers take the last of the light.

The hours are the arrangement. They happen in your own hotel or apartment, they are unhurried, and they exist for their own sake rather than as the ending of an evening that was really about something else.

This city suits that. It is unhurried by nature, considerably less watched than the capital, and the centre is small enough that nothing requires planning beyond the practical.

If you want dinner or an hour along the avenue around it, that is easily arranged around the private hours. It remains optional and it remains your booking.

Where You Are Staying

The Old Town and Vilniaus Street suit short stays and anyone who wants everything within a few minutes' walk.

The New Town along and behind Laisvės Alėja holds most of the larger hotels, and it is where most working stays happen. It is calm at night despite being the centre.

Apartment stays are spread across both, and the riverfront areas along the Nemunas are quieter again. Say where you are — it changes the logistics, and nothing more than that.

History Here Is Not Atmosphere

Kaunas carries heavy twentieth-century history, including sites of occupation, imprisonment and mass murder. The Ninth Fort is a memorial to atrocity and nothing else.

None of that appears anywhere in how I write about this city. I do not use occupation history, prison sites, wartime suffering or the destruction of Kaunas's Jewish community as mood, mystery or romance, and there is no version of this work in which that would be acceptable.

What I describe instead is ordinary: brick, rivers, interwar concrete, an avenue of trees, and evenings that go quiet early.

What I Do Not Have in Kaunas
