Heidelberg is old stone above the Neckar with a famous university and a famous ruin. Lake Constance, an hour or two further south, is still water shared with Austria and Switzerland — and the calmest place in the state.

Stuttgart
A city in a bowl of vineyards that has made a great deal of money and mentions none of it. The hills keep everything in and the evenings to themselves.
Baden-Baden
Thermal water, gravel avenues and hotels that have been keeping confidences since the nineteenth century. The town moves at the speed of a long afternoon.
Heidelberg
A ruined castle above a river and a town that has been written about by every romantic who ever passed through. It has heard all of it and remains unembarrassed.
Lake Constance
Still water at the bottom of the country, with the Alps on the far side and three borders around one shoreline. Nothing here is in a hurry.

- Baden-Baden, Stuttgart and Heidelberg are within a couple of hours of one another; Lake Constance is further south. I would still rather plan one properly than three at once.
