Biarritz became fashionable in the nineteenth century and never entirely let go of it. The belle époque facades above the beach still set the tone, though the town beneath them is thoroughly Basque.
The clifftop stretch around the Hôtel du Palais is the most recognisable part of the seafront; I mention it as geography, not as any kind of connection.
Long Light, Longer Evenings
Summer evenings run late here because the sun does, and the pace suits the kind of time I am usually asked for: slow, private, without a plan pressing on it.
If a Basque table belongs to the night afterwards, that is easy to arrange. It is rarely the reason people write.
The Basque Coast, and Bordeaux to the North
Saint-Jean-de-Luz lies a short drive south toward the Spanish border, calmer and more sheltered than Biarritz itself.
Bordeaux is under two hours north by train, which makes pairing the ocean with the city an easy itinerary to discuss.
