Two Towns on One River

Namur sits at the confluence of the Sambre and the Meuse, with a citadel on the high ground above it and a compact old town of stone streets below. It is the capital of Wallonia and carries that lightly — a working town of moderate size rather than anything grand.

Dinant, half an hour upstream, is more dramatic and much smaller: a row of houses along the water with a great limestone cliff rising directly behind them and a bulbous church dome at the foot of it.

Between and around them the Meuse valley runs green and steep — woods, rock faces, villages on the bends. It feels much further from Brussels than the hour it actually takes.

This is the French-speaking part of Belgium, and the pace, the food and the manner of the place are noticeably different from Flanders. Slower, and largely indifferent to being visited.

A Slower Kind of Arrangement

The enquiries I receive from here have a different shape to the city ones. Less compressed, less fitted around a schedule — usually a night or two with nothing else planned.

The private hours happen where you are staying. The accommodation is mostly small riverside hotels and country properties, which are quiet by nature and rarely busy outside summer.

If you want to be outside, the river in the evening is the whole appeal: a walk along the bank, dinner somewhere small, and back before it is late. Optional, as always, and deliberately unambitious.

What This Does Not Involve

Namur is the seat of Wallonia's parliament and administration, so I will state plainly that I hold no relationship with the Walloon government, its parliament, any regional or municipal administration, any political figure or party, and no access to official events or credentials of any kind. None of that has anything to do with what I do.

The Meuse is busy with cruise boats and river activity in season. I have no relationship with any boat operator, no cruise inclusion, no private hire, no mooring and no river privileges whatsoever. If you want to go out on the water, you book it exactly as anyone else would.

Nor do I hold hotel, restaurant or venue relationships in either town. The citadel, the caves and the cliff are public attractions and I have no special access to any of them.

Women and Couples in Wallonia

Women write from here wanting something genuinely quiet — often people who have done the city version before and wanted the opposite.

Couples come for the same reason, usually for two nights, and often from Brussels, which is close enough to reach easily and far enough to feel properly away.

Nothing about the terms changes for being in a smaller place. Both of you write, both of you say what you want from it, anything named in advance is settled, and comfort leads.
