A State Designed to Be Watched, and the Part That Isn't
Nevada's whole industry is spectacle — lights sized for a city seen from an airplane, entrances built to be photographed, a Strip that performs whether or not anyone is watching it that night.
None of that is where I work. My part of the state is upstairs, past the noise, in rooms that face away from the boulevard rather than toward it. The desert outside Las Vegas — Henderson, Summerlin, the quiet residential edges — makes the same point without needing any lights at all.
The spectacle is optional scenery. The private hour is the arrangement.

Almost everyone who writes to me from Nevada is writing from Las Vegas or on their way there. The desert around it is mostly a matter of distance, not of destination.

- As early as you can. Convention weeks, fights and major residencies compress hotel availability across the whole valley, which affects planning more than it affects me directly.
