A City Built in Layers
Chicago stacks its privacy vertically. The street level is loud, functional, full of purpose; forty floors up, the same city becomes a long dark view and very little sound.
Winter does something similar. When the wind comes off the lake, entire evenings move indoors by consensus, which makes a private night in a warm room feel less like an exception and more like the obvious choice.
Outside Chicago, Illinois is mostly distance — flat country between here and everywhere else. Almost nobody writes to me from it directly; they write from the city, or on their way through it.
