Brick and Nothing to Prove
Piotrkowska runs for several kilometres through the middle of the city, lined with nineteenth-century facades in every condition from restored to barely standing. Walking its length is the fastest way to understand the place.
Behind it, the mills. Enormous red brick structures with arched windows, some converted into hotels and cultural spaces, others still empty. Manufaktura, the largest of the complexes, is a public commercial and cultural site and nothing to do with me.
Łódź's history includes an exceptionally mixed nineteenth-century population and a devastating twentieth century, including the wartime ghetto. Those are historical facts stated plainly here and never used as atmosphere.
The city is rough in places, genuinely striking in others, and almost entirely free of the visitor traffic that shapes Kraków. That is much of what makes it good.

The hours are the arrangement, held where you are staying — a converted mill hotel, an apartment off Piotrkowska, somewhere quieter out from the centre.
Many Łódź enquiries come from people who live or work in Warsaw and would rather be an hour and a half away from it. That is a perfectly good reason and a common one.

Where You Are Staying
Around Piotrkowska is the obvious centre and where most hotels are. Converted mill properties nearby are the most characterful and most variable on visitor policy.
The Manufaktura area to the north-west is busy and central. Bałuty beyond it and Widzew to the east are residential.
Księży Młyn, the old mill workers' quarter to the south-east, is one of the most atmospheric corners of the city and largely residential.
