Mountains and a City
Alberta gives you two extremes and very little in between. On one side a national park where the peaks make everyone feel appropriately small. On the other, a working city with a skyline and a great deal of glass.
Both are useful for the same reason: nobody here is especially interested in anybody else's evening.
Winter is long and dark, which I would not call a disadvantage.
